I thought Mr. Strawn might veer toward The Jungle Book in this brilliant essay, which would have allowed him to bring in a snake, a tiger, and a bear. They design courses, too.

Read Steven Pinker's "The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined." We live in a better, more moral society today than ever before, notwithstanding outliers like the Holocaust. Ask yourself if you'd rather be living now or 50, 100, 1000, 5000 years in the past? Especially if you're a woman, a child, poor, or an ethnic minority.

I don't like Wright's weird conclusions about directed evolution either, but I do agree with him that the Judeo-Christian God has evolved into a more user-friendly concept. To me this provides overwhelming evidence that such a God is man-made. To Wright it seems to somehow prove his existence as some sort of real entity, although it's not a God that any religion or religious person would recognize (as you point out).

Sorry to be picky after reading your excellant book but in it were two errors
You say that at the movies in Freemantle Australi, the patrons stood up when the National anthem was played, it was not God save the Queen, cos at that time it would have been God save the King

Also it was stated that no American Airmen died on the Doolitle raid on Japnan when infact 11 airmen died..............Graet Book

How can you leave Ike out of the discussion? He was not only the greatest president of his presidency, there's a tree at Augusta named after him.

Mr. Strawn - since we are using The Other Wes Moore with our Freshmen this Fall term, I would like to share my students how and why you are writing a review of the book. In other words, since your focus is golf, how and why did you turn your attention the "...Wes Moore" book?

Thanks!

On reflection I agree that my review is pretty generous. Part of the problem with a book like The Swinger is that nothing the authors can imagine is as scurrilous as the true history of the Tiger Woods' scandal. So nothing feels revelatory, as you note. The Tree character's redemption also seems far-fetched. I gave the book to my brother-in-law to read after I was done and his take was exactly yours--a giant shrug of the shoulders. And for sure nothing in The Swinger made me laugh. You're one up.
